The Last Straw Man

Take Action

Whilst there are many ways in which the government has attacked our rights, there are many things we can do to fight back. The government was defeated over 90 days and 42 days pre-charge detention, so we can stop them again. Here are 6 actions:

1) Find out more: about restrictions on our freedom by watching Taking Liberties; about deaths in police custody by watching Injustice; and about government surveillance by visiting the Statebook website. Organise screenings of Taking Liberties and Injustice at your local cinema or on your campus if you are a student.

2) Join these campaigning groups to stay informed and get involved:

NO2ID (Facebook; Twitter)
Open Rights Group (Facebook; Twitter)
The Convention on Modern Liberty (Facebook; Twitter)
Liberty (Facebook)
When No-One’s Watching (Facebook)
Defend Peaceful Protest

3) Sign these petitions:

The Freedom Bill
Fix British protest policing
Create a Royal Commission on UK policing
Overturn Jack Straw’s veto of the release of the Iraq war cabinet meetings

4) ‘Subvertise’ these scaremongering police posters (see BoingBoing’s collection and the Police Billboard Generator):

CCTV Mess

5) Attend the Mayday ‘Celebration of the Police State’ at the Bank of England, organised by the Space Hijackers.

6) Make your own straw men and stick them up around town to publicise this campaign. Take photos of them and share them with:

- the Flickr group pool or add the tag laststrawnman to your photos
- Twitter, use the hashtag #laststrawman when tweeting your photos
- the Facebook group

Or e-mail them to me and I’ll post them here.
